The transfer window may still be over a month away from opening, but there’s no doubt it’s already troubling the minds of Leeds United fans.

The club’s star player Kalvin Phillips is reportedly a transfer target for many Premier League clubs, and that has Leeds fans fearing they won’t be able to hold to their prized man.

Local websites LeedsLive asked fans their thoughts on Phillips future — and while the results may not be a surprise, the decision to include an open-ended “would you like to send a message to Kalvin Phillips” resulted in a deluge of emotional messages.

“Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Newcastle United have all supposedly emerged as potential destinations for Phillip, with Leeds fans naturally concerned at the prospect,” said LeedsLive writer Matthew Holt.

“His current contract runs until June next year, with talks said to be ongoing surrounding an extension.

“We asked fans to send a message to the midfielder and the response proves how much he means to the Leeds United family.”

The responses ranged from pleas to stay through to urging Phillips to choose the right club if he has to go.

Comments included: “”You’re as great a guy as you are a footballer but you are a Leeds United man through and through. We are all glad you’re back fit and well and you inspire every Leeds United fan. You’re a humble man who is driven by playing football and not by money. Leeds are in a battle to stay in the best League in the world and injuries to Leeds players have not helped the team.”

And: “You must do what is best for yourself. If you decide to leave well that’s life but you will always be a Leeds Legend. Come what May, if you do stay, you will be loved as Billy is loved.”

Overall, 85% of fans polled are at least mildly concerned about losing Phillips in the summer, with fans most likely to think the club should get between £70m and £100m for him if he does move — 50% thought that.

Fans also felt if he was to go, a move to Liverpool would have least impact on the future of Leeds United, backed by 46%.
